Obituary for Barbara Phillips (McLey)
Barbara A. Phillips, 83 years, of Fremont, Nebraska passed away Monday, February 21, 2022 at Saunders County Health Center in Wahoo, Nebraska. She was born May 1, 1938 in Omaha, Nebraska to Charles and Elizabeth (Werth) McLey.
She lived in Illinois before moving to Fremont at the age of 8. She attended Fremont Public Schools. Most of her life, she lived on acreages in the Fremont area. Since 1969, she lived on “The Farm”, southwest of Fremont. The past 4 years she has resided in Wahoo.
Barbara married Robert Phillips on May 28, 1955 in Fremont. He preceded her in death on July 31, 2002.
She was a founding member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont. Barbara previously was employed at Schweser’s Department Store, Campbell’s Soup Company and for 25 years worked as laundry supervisor at the Fremont Hospital. After retiring, she worked as a janitor for the Valley Public School and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at Valley. She also helped take care of her grandchildren. Barbara was a hard worker and enjoyed cooking, baking and canning.
Survivors include her sons, Jeffery Phillips of Plattsmouth, NE, Todd Phillips of Cedar Bluffs, NE. Wayne Phillips of Fremont and Rick McLey; daughters, Twyla (Bill) Mentzer of Fremont and Brenda Cody of Waterloo, NE; brother, David McLey of Arlington, NE; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Jack, Richard, and Shawn McLey; and sisters, Virginia Curren and Dorothy Capps.
Funeral service will be 11 A.M. Saturday, March 19, 2022 at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont. Rev. Shari Schwedhelm will officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at church.
Private family burial will take place at the Pleasant View Cemetery near Leshara, Nebraska.
