Obituary for Chantelle Schmitt

Gladys M. “Chantelle” Schmitt, 81 years, passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021 at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, NE. She was born on June 2, 1939 in Aberdeen, SD to Anton and Katharine A. (Gauer) Schmitt.

She attended St. Mary’s School in Aberdeen, SD through the 9th grade then attended Presentation Heights High School, also in Aberdeen for grades 10 and 11 finishing her senior year at Mount Marty High School in Yankton, SD. She attended Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with minors in Art and Theology.

Chantelle taught school for many years in various places: Tabor, SD, Menominee, NE, Omaha, NE, Salem, SD and Vermillion, SD. She also served as Religious Education Director in Coleridge and Belden, NE, Verdigre and Niobrara, NE, and taught religion at St. John Neumann Catholic school in Clarkson, NE. Chantelle also kept house for Father Ronald A. Battiato in Nebraska. She retired in July 2006 in Fremont, NE.

She is survived by brother; Anthony Schmitt; sisters, Rosemary Flint, Alice Schmitt, Virginia Schmitt, Sylvia Smith and Joanne Armstrong.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers John, Joseph, Eugene; sisters, Angela Bolan, Vera Grapp, Helen Babcock and Marie Schmitt.

Services are yet to be determined. Burial will be held in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
