Obituary for Donald "Don" Happel

Donald P. Happel, 95 of North Bend passed away Saturday, August 20, 2022 at Heritage at Shalimar Gardens in Fremont. He was born March 22, 1927 in Sterling, NE to Louis and Amelia (Eilers) Happel.

Donald grew up in Sterling and was a 1944 graduate of Sterling High School. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church South of Sterling. He served in the US Merchant Marines from 1945-1946 during WWII. After the service he returned home to Sterling and worked for Thompson Transfer. Donald married Donna Jean (Aden) June 16, 1949 in Sterling. They lived there and Donald began farming until 1954 when they moved to Dodge County to farm until retiring in 2010.

Donald was a member of, and on the church council and cemetery board of St. John Ridgeley Lutheran Church near Scribner. He was instrumental in establishing the grasslands and windbreak of trees surrounding the cemetery. He was also on the Jamestown School Board in Ames, and secretary of Farmers COOP in Scribner. Donald was a farmer through and through who loved playing cards. He was a dearly loved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Jean Happel; daughter, Kay Poppe of North Bend, NE; sister, Lucille (Marvin) Stone of Kearney, NE; granddaughters, Kim of North Bend, Natilee of Lincoln and Beverly of Boone, North Carolina; 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randy Happel; and son-in-law, Norman Poppe.

Funeral will be 2 P.M., Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at St. John Ridgeley Lutheran Church near Scribner. PMA Sandy Terry and PMA Robert Ball will officiate. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4-7 P.M., and family will receive friends from 6-7 P.M., all at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
