Obituary for Fern Wolfe (Walkenhorst)
Fern L. Wolfe peacefully passed into the presence of her Lord in her farm home on Friday, March 24, 2023. She was 95 years old. Visitation will be from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. Monday, March 27, 2023 at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington, NE. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Arlington at 10:30 A.M.. Burial will take place at the Arlington Cemetery.
She was born and raised on the farm home of her parents, Lawrence and Freida Scheer Walkenhorst on October 31, 1927 northeast of Arlington, NE. She attended Whitford School, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church East School, and was a graduate of Arlington High School Class of 1945.
On March 20, 1949 she married Leland Wolfe at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont, NE. The couple made their home and farmed northeast of Arlington, NE close to where she had been raised. They were married 56 years and raised four children; Sue, Doug, Becky and Chuck. While being a homemaker and farm wife kept her busy, she worked in the offices of Marshall Nurseries during the spring season. Fern was also a personal care giver to a Fremont woman for many years. She enjoyed her family and many friends.
As a young girl, Fern was a charter member of the Cheerful Homemakers 4-H club. Through the years she continued to enter in open class at the Washington County Fair. Fern was a charter member of the Happy Hour Extension Club that began in 1949 and continued to meet for over forty years. For thirteen years Fern volunteered at the former Fremont Area Medical Center. She was very creative in everything she did and used her talent throughout her home and in sharing with others. Among her other interests were her laying hens, taking bus tours and many hours spent putting puzzles together.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lee; brothers Waldo Walkenhorst and Ted Walkenhorst; son-in-law Tom Wakefield.
She is survived by her daughter, Sue Wakefield, Blair; son Doug (Teri) Wolfe, Bennington; daughter, Becky (Carlos) Yandell, Arlington; son, Chuck Wolfe, Arlington; Four grandchildren: Philip (Kim) Wolfe, Krista (Matt) Bendell, Laura (Chris) Boon, Ladonna (Parker) Claussen. She was blessed with 11 great-grandchildren. Brother Roy (Jerri) Walkenhorst currently living in Fremont; a sister-in-law Pat Walkenhorst, Fremont, and many nieces and nephews.
