Obituary for John Wennekamp

John A. Wennekamp, age 84 of North Bend, Nebraska passed away Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Methodist Fremont Health. He was born August 16, 1936 in Monroe, NE to Emil and Viola (Parker) Wennekamp.

John grew up at Craig, NE and graduated from Craig High School also lived in Loveland, Colorado where he graduated from Electronic Technical Institute of Denver, CO. He was employed by Freuhoff of Omaha, Magnus Metal, North Bend Popcorn Plant and in 2000 retired from the Industrial Maintenance Department of Leprino Foods in Dodge, NE. For years he raised top-quality hogs and operated his sharpening business. John was proud to have served in the US Army where he had advanced training with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was on the first drill team in the history of Ft. Ord to receive all possible points while passing in review. He received the 2nd highest score in proficiency in the history of Ft. Carson. He married Bonnie Allgayer on September 5, 1959 at the Congregational Church in Avoca, Nebraska.

John was a member of Bluffs Trinity Lutheran Church at Ames, NE, he was on the board of directors at Good Shepherd Lutheran Community at Blair, NE and is life member of Am Vets Post 20 of North Bend, NE and served as chaplain. He was past president of Cottrell School District 93, former Sunday school teacher and church council at St. John’s Ridgeley Lutheran Church, past president of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, North Bend (Pleasant Valley) and past president of Buffs Trinity Lutheran Church at Fremont. He enjoyed nature, especially sunsets and eagles.

John is survived by his wife Bonnie; sons, Mike (Patty) Wennekamp North Bend, NE and David (Kristen) Wennekamp of Merrimac, MA; 2 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Wennekamp and sister, Marcell Wennekamp.
Funeral will be 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at Bluffs Trinity Lutheran Church 1693 County Rd 17 (corner of county rd 17 & Q) North West of Fremont. Rev. Sean Tyler will officiate. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Tuesday at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend, NE. Burial with Military Honors will be at St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery north of North Bend, NE.

Memorials are suggested to North Bend VFW or Bluffs Trinity Lutheran Church.
