Obituary for Mary Flamme

Mary Libbie (Podany) Flamme, 95 years, passed away January 10, 2023 at the Saunders County Medical Center in Wahoo, Nebraska, surrounded by her family. Mary was born November 8, 1927, to Rudolf and Libbie (Dvorak) Podany on the family farm, north of Clarkson, Nebraska.

Her brother, Lumir was born in 1931. She attended elementary school at District 48, near Clarkson and graduated from Howells High School in 1946. Mary worked various jobs including house cleaning, mowing lawns and helping young couples, after the birth of their babies, staying with them for 1 to 2 weeks. She did that for 3 years, until the Karl brothers asked her to work in their grocery store in Howells for 7 years. She worked Saturday nights until 11 PM.

Mary met Marvin Flamme at a dance in Howells, where they would dance on Sundays at the Howells Ballroom. Marvin would hang out at the grocery store until Mary was done working and then they would go out to eat in Pilger. They were married on January 26, 1956, at the Schuyler Courthouse. The couple made their home on a farm 2 miles north of North Bend, Nebraska, later moving to the Flamme home place ¼ mile north.

Mary belonged to an extension club and a bowling league. She loved to garden, sew, cook, listen to polkas, bake kolaches, and take car rides in the country. Mary was a wonderful farm wife, mother and grandmother. After Marvin’s death on June 24, 1999, she moved to North Bend. She enjoyed playing dominos, cards and the friendships that developed at the North Bend Senior Center. Mary looked forward to a regular Sunday game of Three Thirteen and visits from grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She is survived by children, Twila Flamme and husband, Jeff Alderson, Theresa (Kent) Baumert, Maynard (Stephanie Iwan) Flamme and Mark Flamme, and his special friend, Christine Balch; grandchildren, Mary and Collin Alderson, Neal (Andrea)Baumert, Laura Baumert, Alle (Flamme) and Joe Henderson and Livi Flamme; great grandson, Elijah Baumert; and many nieces and nephews.
