Ruby Darlene Hartmann, age 95, passed away June 9, 2021. She was born on the family farm west of North Bend in Dodge County, Nebraska. Ruby graduated in 1942 from North Bend high School in Nebraska.
Her first teaching experience after high school, at 17 years old, was a one-room schoolhouse in Nebraska where she taught kindergarten through eighth grade. She did everything herself, including starting a fire in the stove to warm the room.
In June of 1947 she married Duane Hartmann and became a homemaker and mother for 10 years. After moving to Lebanon, Oregon in 1957, she attended Oregon State University for her Oregon teaching certification. Ruby taught 2nd grade for 30 years at Queen Anne grade school in Lebanon, Oregon. Mrs. Hartmann loved her job and the students loved her. She used the same classroom for all 30 years. During her later years, Ruby found she was teaching the children of her previous students.
She retired from teaching in 1983. Ruby and her late husband, Duane, enjoyed spending winters in Yuma, Arizona. They moved back to Nebraska in 1988.
Ruby is survived by her son, Wayne Hartmann, formerly of Keizer, OR now residing in Fremont; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Stan Tarr of Lake Stevens, WA, and Brenda and Robert Duran of Tulsa, OK; sister, Carol Lewis of Fremont; sister-in-law Laverna Schmale of Schuyler, NE; Larry Murfin of LaMars, IA; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
